Faculty Member – Humanities (Middle School)

Position Title: Full-Time Faculty Member – Humanities          Department: Faculty

Classification: Non-Exempt/Full-Time                                    Reports To: Humanities Dept. Chair & Dean of School

Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this faculty member is to teach middle and/or high school students the knowledge and understanding of subject matter in a way that demonstrates a gift for teaching, a competence of the academic disciple, and a genuine love for educating students. The faculty member’s pedagogy is to communicate the love of a subject so that an average student can achieve understanding, demonstrate comprehension, and show an appreciation of the subject. Courses taught may include:

  • Children’s Literature, Grammar, and Composition (5th and 6th grade)
  • American Literature and Composition (8th grade)
  • British Literature, Grammar, and Composition (7th grade)
  • Cultural Geography (5th grade)
  • Western Civilization 1 (6th grade)
  • Western Civilization 2 (7th grade)
  • Western Civilization 3 (8th grade)
  • Biblical Catechism (5th and 6th grade)
  • Middle School Latin 1 (7th grade)
  • Middle School Latin 2 (8th grade)

 Job Duties:

  • Ability to prepare and deliver a course syllabus and lesson plans, when requested.
  • Teach assigned subjects.
  • Prepare lesson plans and notes for class(es); create quizzes and tests.
  • Grade homework, quizzes, tests and return in timely manner.
  • Manage classroom, including behavior issues, missing / late work, etc.
  • Tutor struggling students.
  • Parental contact: returning e-mails, phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Attend required school functions.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Compliance with all job requirements and conduct as stated in the Faculty/Staff Handbook.
  • Agreement with the CSD Doctrinal Statement and School Mission and Vision.
  • Exhibit a gift of teaching.
  • Demonstrate competence in the academic discipline.
  • Maintain excellent classroom presentation skills.
  • Possess counseling and feedback skills for students.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents.
  • Maintain a genuine love for students.
  • Express willingness to assume leadership of extra-curricular activities, when necessary.
  • Maintain adequate computer skills.
  • Demonstrate teamwork with teaching peers and administration.
  • Vital Outputs: committed parents and students who have an appreciation for the subject matter, who achieve their highest potential in the subject matter, and who understand the Biblical Worldview in the subject matter.
  • This position is a full-time, exempt position which requires regular on-campus instruction.
  • Activities include walking, standing, bending, kneeling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. The work is performed primarily indoors.

Minimum Educational Background: College degree in subject matter required; Master’s degree preferred (in academic discipline).

Previous Related Experience: Minimum of three years of teaching experience preferred, and preferably in classical and Socratic methodology. Specialization in one or more of these areas listed above in the Position Summary is preferred.
